Port of Saint-Malo, France

Saint-Malo

ABOUT

Saint-Malo is a port city in Brittany, on France’s northwest coastline.  The settlement was originally founded in the 1st Century by the Gauls. Tall granite walls surround the old town, which was once a stronghold for privateers (pirates approved by the king). The Saint-Malo Cathedral, in the center of the old town, is built in Romanesque and Gothic styles and features stained-glass windows depicting city history. It is steeped in history and today is a poular tourist destination with a ferry terminal at the port.

In 2017 the population of the city was just over 46,000.

Currency is the Euro.

THINGS TO DO

There is a lot to do in Saint-Malo and much is within easy walk of the harbour and ferry terminal.

With its rich history stretching back over centuries the city retains its air of the past.  Walking the city walls is a must and the views of the coastline magnificent. At various points along the walls there are information plaques.

There are beaches to walk along, plenty of Flemish architecture to look at, an aquarium, a tall ship to view in the harbour and much more.

When you have finished all that(!) why not pop into the inner part of the walled city and make the most of the French atmosphere and its cafes and bars.

OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO

City walls of Saint-Malo

What a fantastic place to visit – we were completely blown away by it. As this was a tender port we took our time getting off the ship and decided that a walk around the city walls would give us some picturesque views – how right we were to do that.

There are several points where you can gain access and these include ramps for accessibility. The walk gives the most amazing views of the local coastline and also an insight into the city itself. It was easy to get completely caught up in the atmosphere and wonder at its construction and history.

A walk around the inside of the walls is also recommended. Take the opportunity to sit and take in the sights, sounds and smells of the area, or pop in to one of the many bars and cafes for a coffee and cake, or glass of wine and some French cuisine.

We didn’t expect to like this city as much as we did and would go back without hesitation.
